Sir Derek Jacobi wants role in Episode VII

According to Denofgeek Sir Derek Jacobi (The Golden Compass, Gladiator) called his agent as soon as he heard about Episode VII. The following quote from Radio 4’s Front Row

He told the station that “My ears pricked up when it said that Disney was buying Star Wars. Oh, come in Sir Alec Guinness! Yes, on to the agent immediately!”

Continuing, he admitted that “I’d love to do my big franchise movie. Ian’s got his Gandalf, Pat Stewart has his Star Trek, Michael Gambon has got his Dumbledore… They are running out of these old men, you see. I have to be the next!”

He said that “I’m looking for my franchise as we speak!”

Actually Patrick Stewart has two if you include X-Men, but an interesting point none the less by Sir Derek Jacobi.

Although director’s remain quite, actors are expressing interest.

First up….. Russell Brand, according to Digitalspy he is “eager to bag a role“.  I personally like the idea of seeing him involved even if it were a small role.

Tom Hiddleston, better known as Loki in the Thor/Avengers Saga was asked by Digital Spy  about the possibly of a role in Star Wars.        “Goodness, I hadn’t thought of that. I mean, yeah, sure. I’m a HUGE fan, especially the first three…so absolutely, yeah. It would depend on the story and the character and things, but maybe people would associate me too closely with Loki. I hope not. Kathleen Kennedy is a filmmaker of such extraordinary experience and wisdom, and is one of the best producers I’ve ever, ever worked for. She just knows her way around the medium, and the art form and the industry. So I’d take it very seriously if they asked me.

Chris Hemsworth another actor from the Thor/Avengers Saga was quoted by STVEntertainment in a recent interview.   “Oh man, I love those films.  That’s the sort of bread and butter of my film experience as a kid. I would love to work on something like that.”

And finally Robert Pattinson (Twilight)  in a response on Inquisitr to a recent question was “In Star Wars? Oh, absolutely. In a heartbeat. I actually kind of like Jar Jar. I don’t understand what the big deal is about Jar Jar.”   (shaking my head)  I understand that he was put into the series for children but I have to say his part in the Star Wars universe is over besides he is frozen in carbonite  in the Imperial Occupied area of Kashyyyk.

The Return of Darth Vader

What??!!!  Here is where it gets scary for the future of the Star Wars universe.  Darth Vader is dead, we saw both Sebastian Shaw and Hayden Christensen play his Jedi ghost.  According to IGN and just about every other site is suggesting that Vader is being resurrected.

“He’s an integral part of the franchise. Replacing him is virtually impossible,” one source says. “The plan is for him to return and play a significant role in the new films.”

Ok, so how? The best guess i can give at this point that is supported by both the Star Wars movie universe and expanded universe is cloning. The did it in Episode II, Resurrection and many other adaptations.   But if that be the case what happens to his Jedi spirit? Another question to ponder is where would they have gotten DNA?  His arm that was cut off in RTOJ was mechanical, his real arm was cut off on Geonosis, but I would assume they recovered it, the rest was burned off on Mustafar.  But with all this being said, this is a rumor that was born on a UK tabloid site called The Express.  Which has a very controversial history.

Director Rumors

TheForce.Net has an interesting article worth reading that goes into all of the directors who have been mentioned before and even some quotes supporting their non-involvement.  The most interesting name coming up on all of the list is Joss Whedon, yes he is attached to Avenger’s 2 along with overseeing phase 2 of the Avengers saga, but he is also the most quite about it.  According to Comicbook.com he is one of the few rumored directors that have been unusuallu quite.  Given his success with Firefly/Serenity plus taking the helm of the Avengers Saga, I, like others are curious if he is going to somehow contribute to the new Star Wars films.

My personal favorite of the group of directors is Guillermo del Toro.  With titles like Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy series I would be curious what his imagination could bring to the infinite character possibilities of the Star Wars Universe.  Considering his recent involvement with the new Incredible Hulk television show I would not be surprised if he jumped onto a Star Wars project.  Here is an article on ign.com discussing this possibility more.

But these are guesses on both my part and others on the web which leaves my director possibilities the same.

Lucasfilm making 2-3 movies a year?

According to ScreenRant, Lucasfilm will release 2-3 movies a year along with Star Wars Episodes VII-IX. So what does this mean exactly.  So far Disney has held their cards real close so not much info has been released.  Episode VII will be released in 2015 possibly in May (here is an article comicbook.com going into more speculation about the release date).  As for the other 2-3 movies are they going to be Star Wars or one of the other possibilities in the Lucasfilm catalogue.

With the success of the Avenger’s Saga could they apply that same format to the Star Wars Universe.  2-3 movies a year would be a lot for just one title so I am sure you can expect something more than Star Wars.  As of Nov 15 IMDB Indiana Jones 5 has been listed with Spielberg at the helm and Harrison Ford reprising Indy.

From here it is pure speculation on my part from articles that I have seen. A Yoda movie was mentioned 7 years ago by Lucas but never went into production.  One of the benefits of the Star Wars franchise is that they are more CGI or puppet characters than human, allowing for a broader range for that character’s growth. It’s a lot easier to make a puppet or CGI character look younger than a human.  This would also fit into the Avenger’s style back story.  Who has never been curious what Yoda looked like when he was younger?

Another movie idea I saw was one for Boba Fett.  He’s dead some of you are saying but let’s look back at the scene.  He fell into the Sarlac Pit, however he could have survived the fall and I quote C-3PO “In his belly, you will find a new definition of pain and suffering as you are slowly digested over a thousand years”.  One thousand years, safe to say he could be burned some by the acid in it’s digestive system but would not have immediately died.  With that out of the way, according to ScreenRantJoe Johnston has been wanting to do a Boba Fett movie for quite some time. This story broke over a year ago, interesting now how one of the creators for Boba Fett and director of one of the Avengers side stories is now in talks with Disney about a Star Wars film.  It also brings me back to Star Wars: Underworld (which is now in production), has Daniel Logan cast as Boba Fett. Once again this is all speculation but somewhat valid none the less.

Writer Update and Director Update

Let’s start with the director update, as I have noted in a previous post, Colin Trevorrow will not be directing Star Wars, in my research however I ran across an article by ABC News Blogs that Joe Johnston (Captain America) who also worked on Return of the Jedi and other Star Wars series and Jon Favreau (Iron Man) have expressed interest in directing.  On Collider there is mention that Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class) is in talks with Lucasfilm, and according to the article this is why he dropped out of X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Next is the writer update.  According to The Hollywood Reporter, Simon Kinberg (Sherlock Holmes) has been signed on as a writer along with Lawrence Kasdan (Return of the Jedi). Both will also come aboard to produce the films, no information has been given as far as writing responsibilities yet.

In another side note the live action TV show.  Star Wars: Underworld is still in development.  I have seen some mention of an Avengers style saga intended for the Star Wars Universe, I’m curious if the original idea for the show will be the same.

Star Wars Episode VII plot rumors

So let’s talk about these plot rumors, I have seen two that been mentioned frequently so far, one being the Timothy Zahn’s “The Thrawn Trilogy”  and the other written by Lucas that a cat by the name of Super Shadow posted some years ago among other things.

So let’s begin, E!Online reported that according to Lucasfilm sources that the plot of Episode VII will be an original story not an adaptation of any Star Wars licensed materials.  So that kills the Timothy Zahn rumor, if you clicked on the link for Super Shadow you would see that anything with his name on it has been debunked.   Fact of the matter the plot so far remains a mystery, with only George Lucas, Michael Arndt, and Lawrence Kasdan officially listed to the project there are not many clues.

From an article linked here, For “Episode VII,” Arndt’s treatment “will bring the saga of the Skywalkers, the Force-imbued family comprising Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader and twins Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia Organa, to a close in a new trilogy,” said The Hollywood Reporter.

The treatment also calls for appearances from Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher in older incarnations of the characters from the original trilogy along with an appearance from Lando Calrissian as well as some “dead” Jedi’s in their ghostly form.

I don’t know about you guys but I am starting to get excited.

Star Wars Update

Since the announcement a few weeks ago about Disney acquiring the Star Wars franchise rumors have been flying about directors, cast, and scripts.  From Harrison Ford interested in returning to Darth Vader coming back.  There are rumors of an Avengers style trilogy with 2-3 additional movies in between.  Rumors that it is based of Timothy Zahn’s Trilogy or one written by Lucas some years back. Plus is it going to suck or is going to be bad ass!!!  My goal in this blog is to keep it simple so the everyday not-so-fanatic reader can keep up.  Let’s face it, who does not like Star Wars?

First topic is it going to suck.  Well let’s look at Disney.  Pixar, Pirates of the Caribbean and this huge Avengers saga  just off the top of my head.  They have some really great hits in that group alone not including the early animations of Walt Disney’s movies.  I doubt they would tarnish their reputation by putting out a bad Star Wars movie not to mention the potential gold mine if they are successful.

According to sources George Lucas will still be on board as a “creative consultant“.  Lawrence Kasdan (who wrote the screenplay for both “The Empire Strikes Back” and “The Return of the Jedi”)  has been confirmed as a writer, as well as Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Billy Dee Williams and Peter Mayhew expressing interest in the possibly reprising their roles depending on the script.

From the confirmed news so far, I’m willing to bet this is something Disney has been looking at for a while now and they are further ahead than we know of.  Don’t for get to check out my little cheat sheet below, you can find links to articles referencing the cast and crew.   I’ll catch you guys again soon with some plot rumors I have dug up.
